James Cagney was an actor at Warner Brothers whose films included The Bride Came C.O.D., Captains of the Clouds, Yankee Doodle Dandy (for which he won an Oscar). After completing Yankee Doodle in February 1942 he left Warners to form William Cagney Productions with his brother William. He spent time entertaining troops with numbers from Yankee Doodle, and on September 27, 1942, he was elected as the president of the Screen Actors Guild.
